Conemaugh Valley Mutual Insurance Company History (1877-2012)

Conemaugh Valley Mutual Insurance Company is celebrating its 138th Anniversary in 2015.

It all began on February 2, 1877, when seven men felt the need of mutual protection in Cambria and Somerset Counties, and therefore formed Johnstown’s first mutual insurance company. They decided on the name of “Cambria Farmers’ Union Association of Cambria and Somerset Counties”. The first year’s business sowed income of $181.86, expenses of $117.91, thus a balance of $63.95.

In March 1890 it was discovered that there was another fire insurance company with a similar name and therefore a new name was necessary for the charter.

Since Johnstown, which is located in the valley of the Conemaugh River near the Conemaugh Gap of the Allegheny Mountains, Conemaugh Valley Mutual Fire Insurance Company was selected as the company’s name.

As the company grew, on July 28, 1928 our company joined the state association for Mutual Insurance companies in Pennsylvania. That association still thrives strongly today, called the Pennsylvania Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (PAMIC). Current and past employees of Conemaugh Valley have held offices and board seats with PAMIC.

Through this period of time, the business of the company was operated from the home of the various Secretary-Treasurers or rented offices. In the 1940s agents were being secured from outside the Cambria and Somerset counties. The first established insurance company office was located in the Davidsville Bank Building in Davidsville, PA (1944-1954)

On April 30, 1960 the word “Fire” was deleted from the Company’s name to reflect the casualty lines of insurance such as Homeowners, Mobile Homeowners and Business and churches.

On December 6, 1971, the company hired its first full-time manager and moved from Scalp Avenue to 701 Belmont Avenue, Johnstown, PA

In 2007, Conemaugh Valley affiliated with Allegany Co-op of Cuba, NY to provide agents and policyholders with a wider variety of products and protection.

In December of 2011, Conemaugh Valley assumed the business of Canonsburg Mutual Fire Insurance Company

Direct written premium will be approximately $1,800,000 in 2015. We would like to thank all our faithful and dedicated policyholders, employees, agents and directors that have made this history possible.

May 2012 Conemaugh Valley Mutual Insurance Company has moved their office to a brand new building: 334 Budfield Street, Suite 150, Johnstown, PA 15904.
